Thursday morning would have started with a shock for those who began their day visiting the website of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA).

The website welcomed surfers with the picture of a wrecked plane captioned that it was of a crash  in Mumbai with at least 1,000 casualties. But as they scrolled down the page, it was revealed that is was a joke.

The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), however, did not take kindly to their website being hacked. “We have no immediate information on who was behind this. A complaint has been lodged at the cyber crime cell of the Mumbai police. MIAL is taking all necessary steps to restore the website as soon as possible,” an MIAL spokesperson said.

The website was restored by around 10pm.
Niket Kaushik, the additional commissioner (crime) confirmed having received MIAL’s complaint.

According to sources, the hackers claimed to hail from a neighbouring country which is a matter of investigation. On the website, they left a message which read, “We want to warn that we are everywhere—inside the airport, the government, the army and the computer.” The hackers claimed to have hacked the CSIA’s website in response to the hacking of the website of a neighbouring country’s airport recently.

The police were not too vocal about the details of the case. According to sources, their silence was due to the seriousness of the claims and content posted on the website and that any comments prior to the complete investigation would be premature.

The hackers had also uploaded a desecrating picture of the tricolour and according to sources, three websites, including that of Reuters Dubai, were hacked.
