The one-hour strike called by taxi drivers at Mumbai airport on Monday afternoon was enough to impact passengers to some extent. Most were unaware about the strike and had to wait for over 30 minutes before calling for fleet cabs.

Chembur resident Shalini Mishra, 25, and her family had to struggle to find a taxi.  “We landed at terminal 1A but my husband has had to walk a good 100 metres to terminal 1B to look for a taxi,” said Mishra.

While most passengers waited for the black and yellow cabs, others like 25-year-old Shailendra Sharma took matters into their own hands.  “When I came outside I saw no taxis. So I just called for a Meru cab which is on its way to pick me up,” said Sharma, adding, “I had to wait for 20 minutes but it’s ok.”
Though the Mumbai Airport Taxi Rickshaw Union (MATRU) had declared that they would stop work from noon to 1.30pm, they called the strike off at 1pm.

“We do not want to inconvenience passengers so we are going back to work.  But until now, neither the RTO nor Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has contacted us on the issue,” said Kanhaiya Singh, president, MATRU.

More than 2,000 cabbies at Sahar and Santa Cruz airports decided to strike work on Monday against the RTO’s decision to start Dadar-Pune cabs from the airport on June 1.

They demand that even they should be allowed by the RTO to operate on the Dadar-Pune route with a temporary permit since 1,500 passengers ply on this route daily.

The spokesperson for MIAL said that they kept two buses on standby at both airport terminals to drop passengers to nearby stations. The strike failed to impact passengers in the evening at Sahar as 220 extra taxis from outside were made available to passengers.
