The Airport police arrested the driver of a private car for allegedly installing and using an amber beacon on his car while entering the Lohegaon airport late on Thursday evening.

The driver has been identified as Dattatraya Pawar (27), a resident of Kedgaon, in Ahmednagar district.

Senior police inspector Prakash Shah and his subordinates, who were carrying out nakabandi on Thursday, spotted the car with a beacon at the airport at 8.30pm. The cops stopped the car and found there was no government officer inside.

Pawar told the cops he had come to the airport to receive the deputy collector of the employment guarantee scheme of Ahmednagar. He said the official would be arriving from Delhi. As he was supposed to ferry the official to Ahmednagar in his car, he had installed the beacon.

However, the police arrested Pawar under sections 108 and 177 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for using an amber beacon at a sensitive spot without permission and authority.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone IV), Sanjay Jadhav said, “In the view of the Delhi blast, we had stepped up security at the airport. When the cops spotted this private car with the
beacon on.”

“Beacons cannot be installed on private vehicles without permission,” Jadhav added.
