While June 5 marked the world environment day, the aviation sector that is responsible for 2% of man made carbon dioxide emissions is doing its bit to save the environment.

On June 1, Cathay Pacific, its sister concern Dragonair and Swire Hotels announced the hotel groups participation in FLY greener, the airlines carbon offset programme. “Guests  use a designated tablet PC or iPad  containing all guests information and preferences for a paperless experience,” said the spokesperson for Cathay Pacific Airlines. “The hotel also uses energy-saving Lexus RX450H hybrid cars for airport transfers and private hire,” he added.

Air India (AI) too is doing its bit.  “Air India is using corporate document management system to go paperless,” said the spokesperson for AI.  They are also about to implement a new flight planning system that will provide optimised routes for fuel efficiency and result in huge energy savings.

Taking things a step further Qatar Airways (QA), which operated a test flight from London to Qatar with a 50:50 blend of synthetic gas to liquids and conventional fuel in 2009, is developing a plant to produce such a fuel. “Qatar Airways aims to be the first airline in the world to operate a commercial flight using jet fuel containing gas to liquids kerosene,” said the airline.

Not to lag behind airport operators like Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) and Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and have also been doing their as both airports have glass terminals with natural light and rain water harvesting to using recycled water to reduce energy consumption.

“Average water consumption in airport operation at Mumbai is in the tune of 3-4 million litres per day. By using water conservation measures like water saving device (Aerators) at the user end like taps in toilets etc. water wastage management like leakage identification, installation of correct types of taps etc., 19% of water saving was achieved by MIAL in 2010-2011,” said the spokesperson for MIAL.
