A Bandra consumer forum has ordered Russian airline Aeroflot to pay compensation of Rs50,000 to a passenger whose flight was delayed by 34 hours and his relatives were not given correct information about the delay.

Dhunji Dadachanji, a Dadar resident, had booked a return flight to London on Aeroflot. While he was coming back to Mumbai on October 20, 2007, his flight to Moscow, from where he had to take a connecting flight to Mumbai, was diverted to St Petersburg due to bad weather. By the time he reached Moscow, the aircraft had taken off.
Dadachanji claims he was not allowed to make a call at the counter of Aeroflot to his daughter, Ayeshah, who was to receive him in Mumbai. He claimed that he was compelled to spend the night at a cafeteria of Moscow airport. Dadachandji reached Mumbai on October 22, 2007.
When Ayeshah and Dadachanji’s brother in London, Fali, enquired with the Aeroflot helpline, they were informed Dadachanji’s flight was on time. This misinformation added to the anxiety and panic of Ayeshah. Dadachanji said he was unable to make a phone call to his daughter from the airport as there was no facility to purchase the prepaid cards at night.
Dadachanji said inconvenience was caused to him because of the delay and the discourteous attitude of the helpline staff, because of which his daughter ended up waiting at Mumbai airport.
Aeroflot claimed that they had served Dadachanji well and had given him food coupons. However, there was no denial to Dadachanji’s allegations as regards to complaints of rude replies given to his daughter.
