To help flyers identify the best flights to and from Mumbai airport, the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has prepared a list of flights that were delayed by over 15 minutes in the month of April.

The list was prepared on the instruction of the civil aviation ministry which wants airlines to straighten up their act or else lose their arrival/departure slots at Mumbai airport in the next winter schedule.

On Tuesday, MIAL released the list of airlines whose flights were delayed on more than 20% of occasions in the month of April. According to the list, full service carriers (FSC) such as Air India (AI), Jet Airways (JA) and Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) had the most delayed flights to arrive and depart from Mumbai airport.

For instance, AI had 54 flights that were over the 20% mark, while JA had 34 flights and KFA had 40 such flights.  On the other hand, low cost carriers (LCC) such as Jetlite had 18, SpiceJet had 15, Indigo had 10 and GoAir had 9 late arrivals to Mumbai.

Flights that reached Mumbai the most late during evening peak hours mostly originated from tier II and tier III cities like Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar and Ranchi in the case of FSCs and Delhi, Goa, Ahmedabad and Cochin in case of LCCs.

The number of delayed flights to leave from Mumbai airport was comparatively smaller.  For instance, AI had 36, Jet had 34, Kingfisher had 26, SpiceJet and Jetlite had 13 each, Indigo had 12 and GoAir had 6 late departures from Mumbai.

None of the airlines wanted to comment on the issue. An official from the civil aviation ministry said that they are monitoring the situation.  “If these flights continue to be delayed, they might lose their slot in the next winter schedule,” said an official from the ministry.
