Universities in Maharashtra will now get government aid if they really deserve it.

In its August 5 government resolution, sent to all non-agricultural universities, the higher education department has made it clear that only universities with good KPI (Key Performance Indicator) will be awarded good grants.

KPI will cover the status of all affiliated colleges including engineering, pharmacy, teaching, management and other professional institutes.

This means that universities have been made responsible to check and fix the loopholes that might exist in all colleges affiliated to them.

‘Marks’ will be given on many parameters including employable courses, NAAC accreditation, principal and teacher vacancy, research etc.

Evaluation will be done every year in all ‘subjects’ and grants will be based on the ‘mark sheet.’ A five-member committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the minister for higher and technical education which will decide on the grants for universities.

Officials of the Mumbai university did not comment on the new directive but a principal of a south Mumbai college said on condition of anonymity, “Principal/teacher vacancy is a major issue that will require stricter punishment to colleges not slashing the grants of university.”

Rajendra Bhide, who just cleared TY B Com, says, “The provision of sacking or demotion of non-performing officials should also be included to fix responsibility.”
