Apart from urging the electorate to opt for clean candidates in the February 16 civic polls, NGO Agni has launched a campaign for an increased voter turnout.

“The job of keeping the city clean remains with the municipal corporation, but the onus of keeping the corporation clean rests with voters. Hence, the campaign,” said Agni trustee Sharad Kumar.

Agni will release details pertaining to the criminal track of candidates in fray four to five days prior to the polls. Kumar said:“As the affidavits filed by candidates are complex, we would first need to simplify them.”

Welcoming the state election commission’s move to ask candidates to declare their income source, Kumar said it gives voters a better idea about the right candidate.

Co-ordinator James John, who is aiming for a 60% turnout, said, “We want people to go to the voting booth with an angst about what has been happening in the city over the last few years.”
