The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will issue a show cause notice to automobile major, Ashok Leyland, for not delivering 350 buses to the civic body by February this year.

The new standing committee chairman and Bharatiya Janata Party corporator, Ganesh Bidkar, on Monday chaired his first meeting of the panel. The meeting discussed the public transport system.

Speaking to the media, Bidkar said the issue of public transport should be solved on a priority basis. “We should look into why Ashok Leyland could not give us the 350 buses by February. We are going to seek an explanation from the company,” he added.

The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) was to get 650 buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission (JNNURM). Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors had bagged the orders to supply the buses.

According to Bidkar, out of the 650 buses, so far PMPML has received only 150 normal buses and 15 buses with Euro-4 compliance from Tata Motors.

He claimed, “At the meeting with the departments concerned and the PMPML authorities, we came to know that it is not possible to get the remaining buses within the next three to four months as the two companies have to provide at least 8,000 buses to municipal corporations across the country under JNNURM.”

Ashok Leyland failed to get the new model for the bus from the Ahmednagar-based Vehicle Research & Development Establishment, so they did not manufacture the buses.

“We are going to issue a show cause notice to Ashok Leyland and ask them why we should not slap a fine of Rs1,250 per day from the due date of delivery. We are also considering issuing a show cause notice to Tata Motors as they too did not deliver the buses,” he said.
