For the first time in policing history, the Yellow Gate police would be dealing with a case involving sea pirates who have been caught.
Coast Guard officials on Monday morning handed over 15 pirates, caught after they launched a hijacking attempt on a merchant vessel off the Lakshadweep coast on Friday, to the Yellow Gate police station.

Coastguard officials will further question the pirates to know how they carry out operations and where they get arms and ammunition from. The arrested pirates may provide maritime security agencies leads to learn more about sea piracy.
Deputy police commissioner, Port Zone, Quaiser Khalid, said, “Out of the 15 pirates, 12 are Somali nationals while three others are Ethiopians and Kenyans. They have been booker under various sections for illegal infiltration and attempt to murder. They have suffered injuries in the crossfire and are undergoing treatment at JJ Hospital. They will be produced in court on Tuesday and further investigation will be carried out.”
ICG aircraft Dornier, after being alerted by the merchant vessel, conducted a sortie and spotted the pirates. On seeing the aircraft, the pirates changed their direction and moved towards their mother vessel, Prantalay. Indian naval ship INS Cankarso reached the spot and tried to intercept Prantalay. A warning shot was fired but the pirates returned fire. Cankarso fired again, and the mother vessel capsized.
The pirates, along with 20 hostages, jumped overboard and were rescued by the naval team. The 20 hostages were fishermen from Thailand and Myanmar. The mother vessel was a fishing vessel which the pirates hijacked last year in April.
