The police officers, who had been investigating the kidnapping and murder of 17-year-old Adnan Patrawala since 2007, were in for a shock on Monday, when the sessions court acquitted all four suspects.

Sujit Nair, Ayush Bhat, Rajeev Dharaiya and Amit Kaushal, all currently aged between 25 and 31, were set free by the court because of lack of evidence and prosecution’s failure to prove the case against them. The fifth suspect, who is a minor, was tried by the Juvenile Justice Board.

An officer, who was in the detection squad of the Oshiwara police at the time of incident, said: “I shocked when I heard that the four youths were acquitted by the court. We had collected all the evidence connected to the kidnapping and murder of Patrawala. After we submitted the evidence, we expected that the arrested suspects would definitely be convicted.”

“The four youths told us that they had parked Patrawala’s Skoda outside the Seawoods station in Navi Mumbai. They also showed us the spot where they had dumped Patrawala’s body and clothes in the mangroves on Palm Beach Road,” the officer added on condition of anonymity.

The officer claimed that on August 19, 2007, the four suspects had taken Patrawala to Navi Mumbai and they bought alcohol from a wine shop.

“The person who was working at the wine shop had also identified them. The suspects spiked Patrawala’s drink and told him that they should go for a drive.”

“The next day, they made a ransom call to Patrawala’s father and demanded Rs2 crore. But, as the news of Adnan’s kidnapping flashed on television channels, they got scared and strangled him with rope in the car. They then dumped his body in the mangroves on Palm Beach Road, parked the car outside Seawoods station and returned home by train,” the officer added.
