Probe in the Adarsh scam seem to be becoming a nightmare for former Chief Ministers. Former CM and present industries minister Narayan Rane was the latest addition to the list, on Monday.

JK Gharat, deputy secretary, revenue and forest department informed the two member commission set up to probe the scam that Rane, the then-chief minister endorsed the application sought in connection with the welfare of defence services personnel.

The chief promoter of Adarsh addressed a letter to Narayan Rane, who was the chief minister then, on September 21, 1999. “Application for allotment of land was received by the CM and he referred the application to our department,” said Gharat, who was the under-secretary of the revenue department at that time.

“The endorsement made was in Marathi and it read “Twarit ahwal dyava” (submit the report immediately). This endorsement is signed by Narayan Rane, on September 25, 1999,”he said.

Rane, who was then with Shiv Sena, was nowhere in the allegations, till now. However, this endorsement made by him could raise questions over his role in the scam as well.

On January 13, 2000 the chief promoter of Adarsh CHS wrote a letter to Ashok Chavan who was then the revenue minister in connection with allotment of government land to the Adarsh CHS. When asked about this letter, Gharat mentioned that he received the letter on February 2, 2000.

“At the top there is an endorsement with Vilasrao Deshmukh’s signature, the then CM and it reads “Pri Sec (Rev) Pl call for the proposal and put up immediately. Sd/-19.2,” said Gharat.

The affidavit filed by Gharat on Monday, has mentioned a number of letters sent by the society promoters to the government officials. Further cross-examination could bring up a number of hidden facts.
