Five people, including three women, travelling in a Maruti Swift car, were seriously injured when a speeding Skoda rammed into them at Worli Seaface in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Dadar resident and engineering student Saurabh Desai, 23, was driving his Maruti Swift car (MH-01-AL-1348). Besides Desai, his younger sister Aditi, 18,, brother-in-law Sumit Shinde, 28, Desai’s wife Swati Shinde, 26, and Swati’s younger sister, Dipti were also in the car.

Aditi was sitting beside Desai in the front seat, while Sumit, Swati and Dipti were in the rear.

The family left their Dadar home at around 1.30am to see the Bandra Worli Sealink. At Worli Seaface Road, they stopped at a traffic signal at around 1.45am. At the same time, a speeding Skoda (MH-04-DN-2832) rammed into their car.

The impact caused the Swift car to turn turtle immediately. The rear parts of the vehicle were completely damaged.

Desai fell unconscious before he realised what happened. When he gained consciousness, he found that his sister Aditi had hit her head on the dashboard and had fallen unconscious.

In the meanwhile, passers-by gathered and a police mobile van rushed to the spot. They first rescued Desai and his sister Aditi, and immediately sent then to Bombay Hospital. The police then called fire brigade personnel to rescue the remaining three occupants who were trapped in the rear seat which was completely damaged. They too were sent to Bombay Hospital in a fire brigade ambulance.

All five occupants sustained injuries to the head, chest, legs and hands, but were stated to be out of danger. They are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

“We have registered a case against the Skoda driver for rash and negligent driving, grievous hurt and section 184 or driving dangerously under the Motor Vehicle Act.” said a police officer of Worli police station.

He added that a manhunt has been launched to nab the Skoda driver who fled the spot soon after the accident.
