After being mentally and physically abused by her boyfriend over the last few years, 25-year-old Mamta Dedhia finally decided that she had had enough. On Saturday, Dedhia, who works with a leading cassette company, registered a complaint with Shivaji Park police against her boyfriend of five years, Viram Mamalia, a chartered accountant.
According to the police, around 3.30 pm, Mamalia called Dedhia at work insisting that she go out with him. However, when he was unable to coax her, he went to her office in Dadar, caught her by the hand and forced her to come with him.
Embarrassed and angered, Dedhia refused. “Mamalia then allegedly verbally abused her in public. He even twisted her arm and threatened to throw acid on her face if she refused to comply with his demands,” said Vilas Gurav, senior inspector, Shivaji Park police station.
After the public showdown, Mamalia returned to his office. However, this was the last straw for Dedhia, who along with a colleague rushed to the police station and registered a complaint. Acting promptly, a police team went to Mamalia’s office, also in Dadar, and arrested him. He was charged with voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and intentional insult and was produced in Bhoiwada court on Sunday which remanded him to judicial custody till May 15.
The police said that Mamalia came across as arrogant and hot-tempered. “Initially everything was fine in the relationship; however he got dominating and started abusing his girlfriend in the last two-three years,” said a police official.
