Abu Salem is well-behaved and disciplined in jail, according to a report on his conduct inside prison. The gangster, who was allegedly attacked by Mustafa Dossa in Arthur Road jail last week, has been seeking a report on his behaviour since 2008 through the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
This is a clever ploy by Salem to counter the numerous
allegations levelled against him.
Salem’s “behaviour is satisfactory in jail and he lives in discipline” states the last conduct certificate received by the gangster on March 10. The document was signed by the information officer of Arthur Road jail. The jail authorities specify that no complaint of extortion, cellphone use, group or gang activities, was found against Salem.
“There is no information that undertrial prisoner Abu Salem formed any gang inside the jail,” the information officer wrote. The document also states that there are no complaints from either the jail authorities or undertrials against Salem. The document is likely to benefit Salem, who has been shifted to Taloja jail, after he was attacked by Dossa.
The 1993 serial bomb blasts accused filed his first RTI application on December 23, 2008.
“At that time, there were stories in the media that Salem was forming a gang inside jail. Anticipating that there could be false cases registered against Salem, we filed RTI applications,” Salem’s lawyer Raja Thakur said. Salem made similar applications three times since 2008. The documents indicate Salem has been an ideal prisoner since January, 2009, to March, 2010.
On Friday, Salem made an application before the court stating that while he was being taken to JJ Hospital for treatment on July 29, one of the assistant police inspectors threatened to kill him in an encounter when he refused to pay bribe.
