The Shyamal Music Foundation (SMF), in collaboration with TaDhaa Music, is organising the Peshkaar World Music Festival for the first time in the city. The festival, an annual fundraiser in aid of cancer patients, will be held at the Nehru Centre on January 31, 2012, at 6.30pm, and will feature musical talent from the country and abroad.

The first part of the show, entitled ‘Ravi Chary Crossing’, will feature sitar maestro Ravi Chary performing with tabla wizard Aditya Kalyanpur, drum prodigy Gino Banks and guitar genius Sheldon D’Silva. The next segment, ‘Global Conversation’, will comprise another fusion ensemble featuring the likes of saxophone legend George Brooks, violin wizard Kala Ramnath, flute maestro Rupak Kulkarni, expert keyboardist Gulraj Singh and drum virtuoso Mukul Dongre.

SMF is a trust founded with the objective of promoting Indian classical music in India and overseas, and to simultaneously provide a platform for young and upcoming musicians. SMF also provides financial assistance to cancer patients. Aditya Kalyanpur heads the trust and is renowned as one of the foremost disciples of late tabla maestro Ustad Allarakha and tabla legend Ustad Zakir Hussain. Kalyanpur founded the trust in 2007 in memory of his mother who died of cancer.

TaDhaa, a popular syllable popularised by the late Allarakha, is also the name of the music company/label founded by Prasad Tendulkar and Taufiq Qureshi.
