After a spate of incidents of tree collapses, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to form a manual on tree maintenance and analysing them biologically.

The newly formed tree expert committee on Thursday resolved to examine the unhealthy trees.

The seven member committee will draft a tree manual which will lay down conditions mandatory to be followed around a tree. “We will list a set of conditions which ought to be observed in the area around the tree.

A specialised manual will be maintained which will have all the prerequisites,” said Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner.

Meanwhile, municipal commissioner Subodh Kumar had a meeting with  the tree authority. Kumar stated that the regular pruning should be carried out so that balance of the tree is maintained.

More often it has been observed that the paverblocks laid on the footpath infringe onto the gap supposed to be kept around a tree. In such cases, the roots get damaged and it eventually causes the tree or its branches to collapse.

Moreover, the utility companies cut the expanding roots of a tree while laying down underground utilities lines like gas, cable and electricity.

The expert committee will analyse the biological cycle of every tree. Officials say this will help them to identify the life expectancy of a tree. The tree expert committee will also regroup trees on the basis of their species.

“There are some trees which fall and some which break. A study shall be conducted to regroup the trees to prevent such mishaps,” said Suhas Karvande, deputy municipal commissioner (gardens).

As per the findings, the committee will monitor which trees should be planted on the footpath and those which should be planted inside a compound.

“The dimensions of a footpath and the width of the road shall be checked. Also timely review of the health of a tree will be carried out to ensure that no such mishaps occur,” added Karvande. Also, in case of any suspected incident of tree collapse, citizens can register a complaint at 1916 and 108. The gardens department will also have an exclusive email account where citizens can also send in their complaints
