Kolhapur lad Rushabh Dhere has achieved what aspiring footballers of his age from India can only dream of.

The sixteen-year-old budding soccer talent has been selected to represent India at the FC Bayern Munich Youth Cup, thanks to efforts of the Pune FC’s youth programme.

What makes his success more eye-catching is the fact that the young mid-fielder comes from a family of farmers. And Rushabh, a part of the five-member Dhere family, is all excited to take the big leap.

“It is a great feeling and I will give my best to make the most of the opportunity in the championship,” said Rushabh while talking to DNA over the phone from his home in Kolhapur on Monday. He admits that a tag of Pune FC has given him a big jump.

“Yes, the generation next kids in football should thank Pune FC for giving us the exposure,” said Rushabh.

For Rushabh, football has been his first love as he started playing the sport when he was seven years old. He got full support from his parents too. But it was his coach, Vinayak Chavan, who guided him with the basics at Private High School, a famed institute in Kolhapur.

After a string of good performances, Rushabh went on to be shortlisted by the Krida Prabodhini in 2006.

He then moved to Pune in 2007 to hone his skills. Here, it was under Jaideep Angirwal and Javed Khan that he got to polish his skills. Constant exposure at all-India school-level tournaments helped too, and in the process, Rushabh earned honours of being part of a third-place finish in the Under-14 section of the school nationals at Mumbai.

Likewise, he also made a pre-quarterfinal appearance at the under-17 level in the same tournament held at
Andaman and Nicobar.
