This is the last thing one would want to hear on International Women’s Day.

A nine-year-old girl was raped and murdered, and her body was found on the terrace of a building in the police officers’ quarters in the Nehru Nagar locality, Kurla (East). The girl, Rashmi (name changed), went missing on Saturday from near her residence in Hanuman Nagar, around a kilometre from the scene of crime.

Her father Subodh (name changed) said she was last seen at around 8pm on Saturday, playing with friends near her home. Her mother went looking for her at around 9pm but Rashmi was nowhere to be seen.

At around midnight, Subodh told officers at the Nehru Nagar police station about his child’s absence. It is not known if they took immediate steps to trace the girl. This is the second such incident under the jurisdiction of the Nehru Nagar police within a month.

On February 10, the body of a girl of  6 was found in a gunnybag on the staircase leading to the terrace of Sri Sai Shraddha Housing Society in Kurla (East). The crime scene here too was a kilometre away from the girl’s residence in Vatslayatai Nagar. Till date, the police have made no headway in the case.
