About 550 families residing in slums in Pimpri-Chinchwad and 250 families from 17 housing societies in Vitthalnagar, in Wadgaon Budruk area in Pune, left their homes on Monday following flooding after incessant rainfall.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) evacuated the families from Sanjay Gandhi slum, Ambedkar Vasahat, Mamtanagar, Valmikinagar and Subhashnagar as water started entering these slums on Monday. They have been put up at Indira Gandhi High School.

In Pune city, water entered 17 societies, making things difficult for the residents. About 250 families from Samarth Society, Smruti Society, Pandurang Society, Anant Apartments, Puja Park, Raj Park, Anand Park, Sky Residency, Dwarka Society, Ekta Nagari and others locked their houses and went to relatives and friends’ houses.

The fire brigade officials pressed into service two boats in the area on Monday evening to shift people to safer places.

The residents of these societies had borne the brunt last year during the monsoon after torrential downpour led to water logging, leading to loss of a few lives and property.

“Despite what happened last year, things did not improve as the Pune Municipal Corporation did not do much to prevent the water logging,” the residents said.

The local corporator, Balasaheb Kapre, told DNA that only 25% of the retaining wall along the river Mutha has been constructed. If the wall been fully constructed, it would have prevented water from entering the societies.

“I have written to the PMC complaining against the contractor, MB Patil, as he didn’t complete his work on time,” he said.
In these societies, one private earth mover, one Alto car and three motorcycles were submerged on Monday. The water also entered the houses in the area.

Dattatreya Ganpat Bhujwe has been living with his wife, two daughters and son for the last 8 years in the area. “On Monday afternoon, the water came in the house. We have shifted our goods to other places, but couldn’t save the refrigerator. The water has entered the kitchen and bedroom,” he said.

A resident, Ashish Sharma said, “We fear that water is going to increase in the night. The PMC has to take a concrete decision in this regard this year so the problem would not occur in the future.”
In Pimpri-Chinchwad, rain led to rise in levels of the Pavana and Indrayani rivers. The discharge of water from Pavana dam started on Saturday and on Monday, about 12,000 cusecs water was released.

The assistant commissioner and ward -B officer, AA Karche, said, “The civic administration has made arrangements to shift more people, if required, to Kamala Nehru Hindi Medium School, Bhatnagar School and Laxmi Dharmashala in Pimpri.”
