Despite the University of Mumbai (MU) finally discontinuing the eight-year norm of the engineering degree and releasing a circular to that effect, several students are still confused by the different ways colleges are implementing the rule.

One such student told DNA, “This seems like a never-ending battle. First of all, it took really long for the rule to be discontinued. After confirmation of this, it took longer for the ordinance to be declared. Then, the circular took time to reach colleges, and it happened to be very technical, which added to the confusion. The dean of the engineering faculty then had to simplify it for colleges, in order to ensure proper implementation. After all this, we are still apprehensive and confused about the examination, thanks to each college’s different way of implementation.”

Another student said, “Some colleges are giving out photocopied forms to be filled by students, just for the college’s record. Others are giving out new forms for submission.”

The student added, “There are some students who have not cleared their internal assessment, and how they are going to be evaluated is not clear. If these students have to repeat the semester next year, this year has gone for a waste.”

MU authorities, however, denied any confusion regarding the eight-year norm. Dr S K Ukrande, dean of engineering, MU, said, “I have personally sent emails to colleges explaining the implementation process. There is no room for confusion. Eligible students just have to fill the examination form through their college.”

On those who haven’t passed their internal assessments, Ukrande said, “They will have to repeat the semester next year.”
