A group of eight boys from the Shivajinagar-based Observation Home (better known as remand home), who despite setbacks in their lives, have come out with flying colours in the SSC examination. Two other boys failed in the examination.

What they now require is counselling by experts to give proper direction to their careers. Umesh (16), who failed in his standard VI examination, topped among the 10 examinees securing 79.60%.

In a tragic incident, he lost his parents when they committed suicide. He dropped out of school and shifted to the home three years ago.

“I did not expect to get beyond 70% and I was elated when I came to know of the results. My aim is to become a techie. I am taking computer lessons,’’ said Umesh, adding that geography and mathematics are his favourite subjects.

Another inmate of the home, Mukesh (name changed) was a victim of sexual abuse earlier this year.

Despite severe mental trauma, the boy managed to score a decent 54%. About four months ago, he was brought to the Observation Home. Since he was already studying at a school in Moshi, the home authorities made arrangement to take  him to his exam centre in Moshi during the examination and brought him back. He is yet to give a thought about choosing his career.
Purushottam Sankapal, who scored 111/150 marks in mathematics and has scored 64.18%, was extremely happy with the results. “I am happy with the result, but I do not know what course to  pursue,’’ he said.

Similarly, Ranjit Bansode, who scored 60.55% said, “I like cooking and I had spent most of the time in the kitchen at the Observation Home. I would love to pursue my career in hotel management, but I don’t know how to go about it.’’

Another student, despite a personal tragedy in which he lost his mother and his father and was sent to jail, managed to score 50% in the examination. “I am unhappy with the results. My aim is to pursue a career in commerce and become a top notch bank officer,’’ he said.

The two superintendents of the home, Manorama Sonawane and Rajeshri Bhuktare, played the role of mentor and guide to these students and took care of their studies along with Badshah Shaikh, Narayan Dhotre and Neeta Golani, who are teachers.
The home authorities had got them admitted to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Hutatma Balveer Shirishkumar Vidyalay in Shivajinagar. The students were regular in attending classes.

Sonawane said that an NGO provided them textbooks and stationery. “This group of 10 students is the third batch from the home that appeared for the exam. The success of the eight students would surely encourage those preparing for the next year’s exam,” she said.

“This year, the children demanded tea and snacks at night. Hence, special arrangement was made. Some college students also helped the boys with mathematics and English,’’ the home authorities said. Those that want to help them with career guidance can contact on 020-25512540.
