The state power distribution utility, MahaVitaran, has every reason to crack the whip on errant consumers. Around 8.40 lakh consumers in the state have unpaid dues since they secured a connection and owe around Rs1,948.86 crore to MahaVitaran.

The region with the most number of mounting bills is Marathwada.

Among various power distribution zones with the highest dues, Amravati takes the lead, with around 1.16 lakh consumers from residential, commercial, industrial and agricultural areas owing Rs399.87 crore ever since they acquired a connection. Close on the heels are Latur (Rs390.94 crore dues from over 1.33 lakh consumers), Aurangabad (Rs330.48 crore from 1.01 lakh consumers) and Nanded (Rs 310.33 crore from 1.07 lakh consumers) in Marathwada. Nashik (with Rs177.63 crore dues), Solapur, including Baramati, (owing Rs113.35 crore) and Jalgaon (Rs109.01 crore dues) are others zones with the largest number of such defaulters.

The 8,39,896 defaulters from across the state include 5.66 lakh agricultural consumers, who owe over Rs1,709.82 crore, around 2.54 lakh residential consumers (who have run up dues of Rs103.66 crore) and 18,587 consumers from other categories (with Rs135.37 crore in dues).

The Kalyan zone, on the other hand, accounts for the lowest dues of Rs5.76 crore. This is followed by Kolhapur (Rs6 crore) and Pune (Rs10 crore).

“Around 70% of Maharashtra is free from load-shedding and we have decided to continue with power cuts in areas where recovery is a problem and losses are high,” said a senior MahaVitaran official. He added that of the 142 divisions in Maharashtra, 94, including the Konkan region and the eastern Vidarbha, face no power cuts.

The official added that of around Rs6,000-crore bills pending with agricultural consumers, those adding up to around Rs2,754 crore are from Marathwada alone, even though the region has only eight lakh of around 34 lakh agricultural pumps in the state.
