The state home department has sanctioned seven new coastal police stations. These stations would function in the districts of Thane, Raigad and Ratnagiri from December 2011.

The state government's decision assumes significance in the light of the Pakistani terrorists attacking Mumbai on November 26, 2008.

The 26/11 terror attack was a wake-up call for the state and the Union home department, who realised the deficiency in police personnel in marine policing.

Earlier, like most coastal states, Maharashtra had been hiring fishing trawlers for patrolling purposes.

Speaking to DNA on Saturday, additional chief secretary (home) UC Sarangi said, "Special training will be given to the force. The department is also planning to construct two new jetties for the police boats and appointment of police officers."

Superintendent of police, Thane (rural), RK Mor said, "These stations would mainly keep tab on infiltration via sea routes. They would work closely with the Indian Coast Guard and patrol the coastal areas intensively using speed boats."

}The coastal police stations in the Thane rural areas would be situated in Uttan, Arnala and Kelva, while in the Raigad district they would be in Pangloni, Harishivare and Dadar. In Ratnagiri, the new police station will be in Dabhol.

For Thane's three police stations, the state home department has sanctioned 180 police personnel including three assistant police inspectors (API). In the Raigad district, each police station would get 26 personnel including two police sub inspectors (PSI).

For Ratnagiri's Dabol police station, there would be 60 personnel including one API and one PSI.
