The Faraskhana police have booked seven slum dwellers for allegedly forging birth certificates to avail of benefits of the slum rehabilitation scheme in Mangalwar Peth area.

The suspects, identified as Saraswati Abu Devendra, Kalipa Kanderswami Devendra, Arumagham Kanderswami Devendra, Sayyed Hamid Shaikh, Dhanlaxmi Maniayyer, Vijaykumar Malappa and Shabana Shaikh, have been booked under Sections 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

A complaint in this regard has been lodged by additional registrar Aparna Anil Basalkar with the Faraskhana police. According to the police, the suspects had allegedly forged birth certificates by using a fake ID for the server of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

This fraud was uncovered in response to a Right to Information (RTI), 2005, query filed by civic activist Vijay Kumbhar, who had asked about the beneficiaries of a slum rehabilitation project in Mariammanagar in Mangalwar Peth.

When he sought information about their birth certificates, the additional registrar’s office told him in a written reply that in the case of three beneficiaries, no birth records existed in the original register, but records were there on the computer.

A login ID named ‘Jahangir’ was used for the purpose, but nobody in the Kasba Peth office of Registrar (births and deaths) has such a login ID.

Kumbhar had filed a complaint in this regard with municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak. Assistant police inspector AB Fuke of Faraskhana police station, told DNA, “We have registered a complaint and would arrest suspects after completing the investigation.”
