State agricultural department suspended 50 officials for the irregularities in the distribution of the prime minister and chief minister packages meant for the families of the farmers that committed suicide over the agrarian crisis.

The issue was raised by Harish Pimpale, Devendra Fadanvis of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and later backed by the MLAS from other opposition parties too.

Agriculture minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil admitted that the irregularities had taken place. And further added that the responsibility was fixed on 405 officers who were the cause for the irregularities in the distribution of the prime ministers and chief ministers packages meant for the farmer’s families. He also said that the government would initiate the suspension in a month’s time.

This led to the furore from opposition benches who raised the question as to why the government was shielding the officers even after having proof of their involvement in the irregularities.

“The irregularities were proved in the report submitted by a committee three years ago. Why is government buying time and wants more time for the suspension of the officers that did not even spared the dead persons,” said Fadnavis.

The pressure from the opposition was so heavy that the minister announced the suspension of the officers with immediate effect.

Later, outside the house, Vikhe Patil clarified that 50 officers who were directly involved in the irregularities were suspended while the decision about the rest of the officers will be taken in a month’s time.
