5 jewellers held for buying stolen gold

The LT Marg police have arrested five jewellers from Solapur for allegedly buying jewellery from an employee of an ornament manufacturing unit in Kalbadevi. The employee had stolen ornaments worth over Rs80 lakh.

The arrested jewellers are Macchindra Chinchankar, Nagendra Raikar, Amol Shahane, Bhopal Rajpurohit and Ramesh Khandelwal.

The police said the arrests were made after one Jayantilal Dhanresha was nabbed for allegedly stealing jewellery from a gold ornaments manufacturing unit at Kalbadevi run by Subrato Mandal.

“Dhanresha had been stealing ornaments from the unit since February last year and till date he has sold ornaments worth Rs81 lakh. He revealed that he had sold ornaments to five jewellers in Solapur, three in Ankaleshwar and one in Valsad,” said an officer from LT Marg police station.

He added that Dhanresha had sold 250gm of gold ornaments to Shahane Jewellers owned by Amol Shahane and 300gm to Harshada Jewellers owned by Chinchankar in March. In April, Dhanresha sold 110gm to NR Jewellers owned by Raikar and 325gm to Dhanlaxmi Jewellers owned by Rajpurohit. In August, he sold 450gm of gold ornaments to Siddh Gold jewellers owned by Khandelwal.

A police team conducted searches in Mangalwar Peth and Saraf Bazaar on Friday. “We brought them to the city on Saturday. They are in police custody till February 9,” said a police officer.
