Five people have been arrested by the Pydhonie police for allegedly stealing gold biscuits, cash and ornaments worth Rs3.52 crore. The theft was committed at an office on LT Marg. All the stolen booty has been recovered by the police in 72 hours of the case being registered.

The arrested people have been identified as Sandeep Sharma, 21, Devilal Meena, 21, Pushkar Patel, 19, Gopal Nagora, 21, and Mahavir Chajed, 26, all residents of Udaipur in Rajasthan and Ahmedabad.

According to Anil Kumbhare, deputy commissioner of police, Zone II, on June 13, the complainant Mahendrakumar Jain, 38, had lodged a complaint with the LT Marg police stating that some unknown people had allegedly stolen cash and jewellery totally valued at Rs3.52 crore from his office using duplicate keys. The police immediately swung into action and a special team was formed. “We went through the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the office building. Among the few people who had entered the building, one person looked like Sharma, who works at the same office for the last nine months,” Kumbhare said.

Sharma allegedly was seen entering the building at around 9.50pm on June 11. He came out within 10 minutes. “When he was questioned, he initially denied but later broke down and revealed that the other accused people captured in the footage were his friends,” Kumbhare said.

On the basis of information provided by Sharma, the police got hold of the other accused from Udaipur and Ahmedabad. They were brought them to city on June 18. “It was learnt that the stolen booty was kept at Chajed’s Virar residence. The entire stolen gold ornaments and cash of Rs6 lakh has been recovered so far,” said Gulabrao More, police inspector.

He added that, the accused told the police that they made duplicate keys of Jain’s office and decamped with 12 gold biscuits weighing one kg each, 4.40kg of gold ornaments and cash Rs9 lakh within minutes. “Interestingly, there were silver ornaments too in the office, but the gang chose only to take the gold,” More said.
