The Dharavi police arrested five persons who were allegedly responsible for the colour-poisoning that took place in Dharavi this Holi. One minor lost his life due to the poisonous colours and around 200 were admitted to hospital.

The police have arrested Abdul Gaffar Abdul Satar Siddique, 43, a resident of Mahim, Mushtaq Ahmed, 38, Hayat Mohammad Sheikh, 36, Mohram Ali Abdul Zabar Siddique, 42 and Mohammad Shafique Abdul Zafar Siddique, 35 all residents of Lalubhai compound in Mankhurd.

On Thursday afternoon, around 200 persons were admitted to the Sion Hospital and were suffering from breathlessness and vomiting due to chemical reaction of the colours.

According to the police, most of the children were residents of Shahunagar, Mahim and Dharavi who went to a colour factory in Navrang Compound in Mahim to buy colours.

"The accused are the owners of dye shops who had negligently left five gunny bags of dye since last one year. The children mistook them for Holi colour," said additional commissioner of police, Quaiser Khalid, (east region).

The five bought dye from the scrap wholesale market and illegally refined in huts in Dharavi and sold it to paint manufacturing companies. In July 2010, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had demolished their illegal shop and confiscated their material but the five gunny bags filled with dye containing benzene, a chemical commonly found in wall paint, were left behind. "The accused should have disposed off the material. It cost someone their life and so many landed in the hospital. We have booked them for negligence," said Khalid.

Around 12.30 pm, when people returned home after playing Holi they began feeling uncomfortable due to the reaction with the chemical.

At Sion hospital, around 200 people were admitted because of the reaction. Four patients are currently under observation while one of them is admitted to Intensive Care Unit. The 12-year-old boy, Ritik Trishul, who was admitted to KEM hospital, is still serious.
