The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) standing committee on Tuesday ordered the education board of the civic body to submit a detail statement on its English medium schools.

The move of the panel came after it came to its notice that 36 of its 46 English medium schools managed by the board were unauthorised.

Chairman of standing committee, Ganesh Bidkar, on Tuesday told reporters that the general body had approved only 10 English medium schools.  “But the education board has started 46 English medium schools over years. Thus 36 such schools are unauthorised,” Bidkar claimed.

He expressed surprise that the expenses on these unauthorized English medium schools were not questioned during successive financial audits of the board.

He said that the standing committee has decided not to start any new English medium school, and attempts would be made to reduce the number of such schools by amalgamation.

He said that it was decided in the meeting that the salaries of teachers in these unauthorized English medium schools be paid using the same budget for the education board. He said that the authorities of education board could not explain the situation immediately. They have been asked to present a detailed statement on the issue within a week.

He said that presently there are 5,300 students studying in English medium schools of the PMC education board. A problem has arisen about 150 students of these schools who have passed out in seventh standard. The PMC education board does not have middle school for eighth standard onwards and these students are not getting admission in private schools. Over period of time the problem would get more serious.

He said that the committee asked the education board to submit a report within a week on what should be done to solve the problem students passing out from seventh standard and not getting admission in eight standard.
