Since the beginning of this month, 44 people  have died of malaria. The disease has proved far more fatal compared to other monsoon diseases this year. However, the civic body has claimed that the number of malaria cases has reduced by 30%. “

As compared to the last 15 days of July, we have seen a 30% reduction in positive cases in the first 15 days of August. The cases have dropped even though the number of blood samples taken was more,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner (health).

According to Mhaiskar, availability of beds has improved. “Patients are not put on floors any more,” she said, adding that the civic body has arranged to rent camp beds if there are more patients.

That said, three more people, including a eight-year-old child, succumbed to monsoon related diseases on Saturday. The minor, a resident of Dadar (East) succumbed to dengue fever. A 22-year-old Mahim resident and a 50-year-old man from Kurla (East) died of gastroenteritis and malaria respectively.

BMC officials have also taken tips from the National Institute of Malaria Research (NIMR) and the state government who successfully dealt with the mosquito menace in Gadchiroli. “We will make the standard operating procedures (SOP) compulsory all year round to reduce the infection and mortality,” added Mhaiskar.
