3,000-year-old mummy on display at museum

If you have always wanted to know more about Egyptian mummies and what goes into the process of mummifying, then the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) is the place to head to. The museum will play host to a unique exhibition — ‘Mummy: The Inside Story’ — from today.

The exhibition will take visitors on an enchanting 3D exhibition into the coffins of Esperennub, a priest who lived and died in Egypt nearly 3,000 years ago.

Non-invasive and cutting-edge technology such as x-raying, CT scans and advanced computer technology will also be integral to the exhibition, and will take visitors through a ‘virtual unwrap’.

The 3D journey that combines dramatic reconstruction of the priest’s life and mummification in ancient Egypt will also be showcased using forensic methods. To add more value, the exhibition is also designed with a five-minute pre-show film, giving context to his historical and social background.

The inauguration of the exhibition was presided by Peter Mather from BP; Kumari Selja, minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, GOI; Jagannatha Kumar from Reliance Foundation;  Eknath A. Kshirsagar from CSMVS; Neil MacGregor, director, British Museum and Sabyasachi Mukherjee, director general, CSMVS.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with the British Museum of London, and CSMVS, and backed by BP and Reliance Foundation.
