Close to six months after the November 26 terror attacks, authorities fear that the bodies of nine slain Pakistani gunmen kept in a city morgue could begin to decompose if not disposed off soon.

"Though the bodies are still being kept in the morgue of government-run JJ Hospital, we have found that there is a possibility they could begin to decompose soon," Bhushan Gagrani, secretary (Medical Education Department), said.

The doctors at the hospital have maintained that bodies in the morgue are normally preserved for considerable time by using an embalming liquid.

"But due to the humidity in the city, it is possible that the bodies could begin to decompose soon and we will bring this report to the notice of the police," Gagrani said.

The police, which has the custody of the nine gunmen who were killed in locations like Nariman House and hotels Taj and Oberoi, is yet to approach a special court conducting the trial in the November 26 terror strikes seeking permission to dispose off the bodies.

The preservation of the bodies was also affected by the injuries sustained by gunmen in a pitched battle with security forces.

Though the nine gunmen are reportedly from Pakistan, the members of Muslim community here said they would not allow the bodies to be buried in any cemetery in the country.

Pakistani authorities have also refused to accept the bodies despite Indian government submitting evidences of the gunmen being from the country.

The nine slain gunmen whose bodies are lying in the morgue have been identified as Hafiz Arshad, Babar Imran, Nasir, Abu Fahad, Ismail Khan, Abu Ali, Abu Shoaib, Chhota Abdul Rehman and Abu Umed.

The attacks, allegedly perpetrated by Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed the lives of over 170 persons and injured 234.

Only one terrorist, Mohammed Ajmal aka Kasab, who was caught alive is currently facing trial along with two others in the 26/11 attack case.
