More than 230 trees of various species were chopped off in
Mamatanagar, in Old Sangvi area, in the first week of this month.

Taking serious note of the violation, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has now served a notice on landowner Shekhar Shitole, asking him to explain the reason for chopping the trees without prior permission of the civic body.

The trees that faced the axe include babul, karanj, tamrind, chandan, subabool, bor, gulmohur, shishu and mango.

The PCMC garden superintendent, Suresh Salunkhe, warned that if the reply is not satisfactory, the civic body could initiate legal action against the owner of the land.

“I have issued my notice on April 15 and Shitole has to respond in writing within a week. If we are not satisfied, we are going to file a case against him in the court since he did not take the civic body’s permission to cut trees, which is mandatory,” said the PCMC garden superintendent.

According to him Shitole had verbally told him that since the trees were posing problem in measuring the land, he had no option but to cut them. But PCMC officials are not convinced with his
argument.

The issue was reported to the PCMC authorities by some local activists on April 6, when they saw the trees were being chopped off on that plot of land. “On April 6, some of us immediately contacted Salunkhe. But no prompt action was taken by the civic boy,” alleged an activist, Raju Savale.  Later a D Ward staff of PCMC at the rank of a supervisor, Vilas Shelar, visited the spot and conducted the panchnama.
