22-year-old female behind pile up on Marine Drive

In a case of rash driving, a 22-year-old female fashion designer was arrested by the Marine Drive police on Saturday for allegedly losing control over her Honda Accent car and ramming a hawker, four cars and four two-wheelers parked outside the Hindu Gymkhana on Saturday evening.

“Disha Mehta, 22, a resident of Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri (West), was booked under section 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by endangering life or personal safety of others), and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code. She had not consumed alcohol. However, we have collected her blood samples and sent them to Kalina forensic lab for testing,” said a police officer, adding that she will produced before the holiday court on Sunday.

The hawker, Salauddhin Sheikh, who was carrying bananas on a cycle, sustained injuries to his head and was rushed to GT Hospital nearby. He was discharged later, the officer added.

The incident took place at around 3.50pm. Disha Mehta and her female friend were going towards NCPA from her Lokhandwala home in her Honda Accent. She was driving the white-coloured car was at over 80 km per hour. When she was reached Hindu Gymkhana, she lost her control and knocked down Sheikh.

Her car then ran over the divider and rammed into parked vehicles outside the Hindu Gymkhana. Four cars, including a Honda CRV, a Santro, a Fiat and a Hundai, as well as four two-wheelers, including a Pulsar and Bajaj, were completely damaged.

A cricket match was going on at Hindu Gymkhana, which is why several four- and two-wheelers were parked outside, said the officer.
