20% of monsoon in 15 days in Mumbai

After 10 years Mumbai received highest rainfall in first 15 days of this season. This year Mumbai received 422.7mm (in city) and 582.79mm (in suburbs) rainfall. In 2010 the city also experience downpour of the quantity.

After 10 years Mumbai received highest rainfall in first 15 days of this season. This year Mumbai received 422.7mm (in city) and 582.79mm (in suburbs) rainfall. In 2010 the city also experience downpour of the quantity.

Normally monsoon arrives from June 7 every year, but this year it arrived much early and started from June1. From June 1 to June 15 city received heavy rainfall. But June 10 and 11 were the wettest monsoon of the 15 days. On June 10 it was 102.6mm in city and 60mm in suburbs and on June 11 it was 106.2mm in city and 184.4mm in suburb.

“Though in 2010, it was highest rainfall of the decade but in first 15 days of monsoon Mumbai received it’s 20% of monsoon after nine years,” said an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

In 2009, the monsoon was very poor and due to which city faced many problems regarding water supply. The almost faced 20% water cut throughout the year. On very next year in 2010 the rainfall was good enough and also made the water situation of the lake healthy.

Some how it was also wettest monsoon last year as the city received 60% more than the annual average rainfall. Colaba recorded 2,896.2mm so far, 800mm higher than the second highest of 2024.2mm in 2007. The lowest rainfall recorded at Colaba in the past decade was 1,144mm in 2002.

Rainfall data between 2002 and 2011 collected from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and compiled by BMC showed both Colaba and Sanat Cruz weather stations recorded all-time highest rainfall of this year.
