Though the number of accidents during this year’s dahi handi celebrations were more than previous years, there were hardly any serious injuries to govindas. While 205 people were injured this year, the number was 170 last year. However, there were no
casualties this year. Last year’s dahi handi celebrations saw two deaths.

“The upcoming BMC elections have 50% reservation for women and that’s why many politicians didn’t sponsor the way they do every year. This resulted in a dip in enthusiasm. It can be sheer luck that there were less serious injuries,” said a doctor from the KEM Hospital.

Dahi handi mandals, however, reason it with increase in awareness among people. “People are practising more before participating. There is more awareness on safety,” said Sachin Ahir, co-ordinator of Dahi Handi Mandal Committee in Mumbai. Dr AV Gvalani of the KEM Hospital said,  “Drinking is a major problem among revellers. It may be one of the reasons why they lose control and get injuries.”

Dahi handi mandals are thinking of bringing in a code of conduct for govindas. “Code of conduct is necessary. We have certain guidelines in place to stop govindas from drinking liquor ,” said Ahir.  Meanwhile, the KEM Hospital saw 105 patients this year.
