Initiatives taken by the police to protect senior citizens seem to have paid off, as there was a marginal decline in the number of murders in that category in 2010 over the previous year. Also, the police received the maximum calls related to senior citizens last year since 2006. The worrying factor, however, is that the detection rate hasn’t been 100% in the past five years.

According to statistics made available by the Mumbai Police, 11 cases of murder with robbery were registered last year as compared to 13 in 2009. Nine cases of senior citizen murders were registered in 2007, the lowest figure since 2006.

Region-wise data reveals that one case of murder each was registered in south, west and northern Mumbai in 2010 and four each in central Mumbai and the eastern suburbs. However, the police were unable to detect two cases involving the killings of senior citizens in central Mumbai. Vandana Kadam and Sita Narayanan, from Worli and Dadar respectively, were found dead at their residences.

Police commissioner Sanjeev Dayal, during the annual press briefing earlier this month, had said that the safety of senior citizens was among the topmost priorities of the police. Adequate measures and efforts are being taken to ensure their safety, he had said.

“In most cases, we have seen that senior citizens are being attacked by their domestic helps or someone known to them. Since they stay alone at home and cannot defend themselves, they can be targeted easily. We have started a dedicated website and phone number facility for senior citizens and have been receiving a good response,” said a senior police official.

He added that the helpline received the lowest number of calls (16,277) in 2006. “It received 26,567 calls last year. The figure is the highest since 2006,” said the official.
