Military Hospital (MH), Khadki, distributed 20 electric wheelchairs to disabled soldiers on Saturday. The hospital received Rs40 lakh for purchase of these electric wheelchairs.

The year 2011 has been declared ‘Year of the Disabled’ and new programmes, such as giving monetary aid to disabled soldiers, modernising the infrastructure of the department of occupational therapy for improved training and better amenities for soldiers was announced at the distribution ceremony.

The hospital will also purchase patient welfare items including arthroscope for knee surgeries, battery operated vehicles and special ambulance for transport of handicapped patients with facility to move-in with wheelchairs.

“Comprehensive health care involves a complete rehabilitation of our soldiers in all physical, mental and social spheres and MH Khadki ensures that the same is implemented in its totality,” said Brigadier VK Sinha, Commandant MH Kirkee, in his inaugural address.

Ajay Kumar, a Lance Naik (L/NK), damaged his spinal cord and vertebrae while transporting ration for the army. He slipped while lifting the food supplies and suffered a spinal cord injury. “When I was admitted to the hospital on May 11, 2009, I could not move any part of my body or control my bladder and bowel movements,”  he said.

Through regular physiotherapy provided at the hospital, he recovered the movement of both hands and will get further treatment at the hospital.

While driving to his house in a Tavera during a vacation, Khurshid Ahmed of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry met with an accident which injured his spinal cord.

He was paralysed and still cannot move fingers or legs. With the help of his palm, he is able to operate the electric wheelchair and move around without any help.
