A 16-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries after clubbed by a group of 12-15 people at MIDC in Andheri (East) on Wednesday. Twelve persons, falling in the age group of 17 to 22 years, have been arrested for charges of rioting and murder. Three of them are minors.

According to the police, Ansha Agrawal, a Class XI student of Ritambhara College at Juhu who lived with his parents and older brother in JB Nagar at Andheri (E), picked up an argument around 10.30pm on Tuesday with a peer who allegedly abused his mother and sister. The argument soon got out of hand and several of the peer’s friends — 11 to 14 of them — gathered around and started beating Agrawal up with wooden clubs and iron rods, said inspector Mohan Waghmare of the MIDC police station.

“The accused are Agrawal’s neighbours and they knew each other. The accused told in their statements that they assaulted him only to teach him a lesson and not with an intention to kill him,” said Waghmare. Agrawal sustained grievous injuries on the head, stomach and other parts of the body. Agrawal was rushed to the hospital, but he was declared dead before admission. “The accused will be produced in the court on Thursday. The line of investigation will look at whether there was any other reason for killing Agrawal,” said Waghmare.
