Sixteen new buses bought for the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) are lying unused at the Nehrunagar depot in Pimpri-Chinchwad area for the last 10 days, alleged Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activists.

They have threatened to agitate on Friday and bring those buses to ply on the roads. Senior BJP corporator, Vikas Mathkari, and party president of Pimpri-Chinchwad unit, Eknath Pawar, alleged that the transport utility is planning to bring those buses on roads to mark the birthdays of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders.

“They are waiting for NCP leaders to inaugurate the buses on their birthdays before they hit the roads,” they alleged.

Mathkari told the media that Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) received Rs261 crore to buy 650 buses for local bus transport under the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal mission (JNNURM).

After the media highlighted the administration’s inaction in procuring buses and he and party leader Anil Shirole resorted to an indefinite fast, the administration procured buses, he said. Mathkari said 16 buses, costing Rs27 lakh each, had arrived from Lucknow on January 26 and 27. Registration and checking of buses had been completed and they are ready to be used.

“About 1.92 lakh passengers have been deprived of the services of these buses. We condemn the PMPML administration for not utilising buses,” he said. The BJP leader said if the buses are not introduced by Thursday then the party activists would force the administration on Friday to bring the buses on the road.

According to sources, the birthday of NCP city unit president, Azam Pansare, is on February 12; MLA Laxman Jagtap’s on February 15 and the leader of house, Jagdish Shetty, on February 18.
