Turning their disability into their strength, 15 students of the Poona Blind School located in Koregaon Park have fulfilled their dreams by passing the SSC examination with flying colors.
According to the school administrator, Dr Sharmila Gujar, of the 15 students who appeared for the SSC exam, six scored more than 70%.

Yenpure Pandhari (78.73%), Sunil Bhosle (75.82%) and Sunil Borse (72.36%) all hail from the fringe villages around Pune.
The boys attributed their success to their school teachers and volunteers who came up with innovative teaching methods.
The lectures were recorded and copies were given to each student. A donor had gifted each student, a MP3 player using which they could listen to the recorded lessons anytime.  “This made learning and memorising important details very simple for everyone,’’ said one of the students.

“Studying for chemistry was a big challenge as it involved complex equations and nomenclature which had to be memorised,’’ said Nitiraj Deshmukh, son of a farmer from Satara. Nitiraj scored 70.18%.

Pandhari who scored 78.73 % marks found English the toughest subject. “There were complex spellings to remember but our
teachers helped us by continuous revisions,’’ he said. Yenpure wants to pursue law in the future and wishes to make society more receptive towards visually impaired individuals.

The students followed a strict routine everyday to prepare for the exams. “We studied but it was never boring. During the breaks, we listened to music or talked to friends,’’ said Shankar Pawar.

However, getting good marks in exams is not the only thing these students aspire for. Some of the students wish to take up music as a career. While some want to be music directors, others wish to become doctors
and engineers.
