11 seized vehicles burnt down

In a major embarrassment to the Mumbai police, an unknown person set two Scorpio cars and nine motorcycles on fire on Friday despite a guard deployed at the ground where seized and recovered vehicles are kept by the police.

The incident came to light on Friday at 9am when a policeman went to take over guard duty at the dumping ground at Shastri Nagar in Goregaon (West). All the vehicles had been recovered and seized in different cases by different police stations of Zone XI.

“We have registered a complaint and are trying to trace the accused. It appears that the person could have done this just to destroy some evidence,” said a police officer on condition of anonymity. “It seems that the person used kerosene to burn the vehicles,” said a police source.

However, additional commissioner of police Ramrao Pawar said, “It appears that someone threw a cigarette or beedi after smoking due to which the vehicles caught fire. The investigation is on.”
