A project and a study to determine the effect of a lifestyle modification programme on preventing or delaying the onset of Type 2 diabetes and cardio-vascular diseases in IT professionals has been undertaken by the cardiac rehab centre, Just For Hearts.

The work and selection of the volunteers will begin from next month onwards.

Explaining about the project, Dr Ravindra Kulkarni, director and cardiologist told DNA, “Today, more than 220 million people worldwide are suffering from Type 2 diabetes and India leads the world. Currently in India, there are around 51 million people living with diabetes and this is expected to rise to 87 million by 2030.

Also, nearly 18% of Indian adult urban population is affected by Type 2 diabetes. The incidence of cardiac vascular ailments today among youngsters is around 10 to 15% which is expected to increase. But both the ailments can be prevented or tackled early through lifestyle modifications which will be included in this study.’’

The project that will begin from next month onwards would need a sample size of almost 1,000 to 1,500 volunteers from IT industry. The need for volunteers has already been discussed with IT companies based in Hinjewadi and Magarpatta.

For two years, their diet, body mass index and biochemical parameters will be followed. Accordingly, some changes will be made to help them prevent the diseases, he said.

Dr Kulkarni said some preventive measures rather than stressing on lifestyle changes are needed. There are some common risk factors for both the diseases like being overweight, high waist circumference, sedentary lifestyle and high stress levels.

Many IT professionals are falling prey to these lifestyle illnesses due to their sedentary lifestyle. They face health challenges mainly due to shift duties, odd working hours, erratic eating habits, sedentary lifestyle (desk job), competition and constant stress levels.

The study will aim at determining the impact of a lifestyle modification programme on such changeable risk factors in IT industry employees and finally on the incidence rate of Type 2 diabetes and cardiac ailments.

“In the long run, this will have considerable benefits both for the employees and the employers, and will hopefully reflect in better industrial outputs and growth,’’ Dr Kulkarni said.
