The recent incident at the Delhi Zoo, where a 20-year-old was mauled to death by a tiger, has raised questions about the level of security in Indian zoos. While it is considered as the boy's mistake in jumping across the safety barricade, there are some fingers pointed at the zoo staff who were ill-equipped to handle the situation.

There are lessons to be taken from this incident as it is a wake-up call for zoos across the nation, including our very own Byculla Zoo. Among other things, the zoo has reviewed safety measures, staff briefing and rounds meant to keep a check on the visitors.

Dr. Anil Anjankar, the Zoo Director, says, "We have barricaded enclosures for animals like the Himalayan Black Bear, thus providing it a very safe zone. Before we begin to construct the enclosures, we scrutinise the safety levels of the animal and the visitors. Only then is the design for the enclosure approved. This way, we avoid life-threatening situations."

This process is being followed for all new enclosures that are coming up in the zoo. Anjankar also informs us that on alternate days, the zoo staff, including the security personnel, report directly to him so he can oversee every minute detail. He shares, "Every alternate day, I brief the team and keep a check on the key problem areas. The team is efficient and they keep a check on the safety of the animals as well as the visitors."

The Director guarantees that the safety barriers are designed well, making the zoo completely secure. On weekends, when the footfall is high, the staff members are trained and briefed to manage the crowd accordingly. Anjankar adds, "We have enough signage to help visitors and everything is under control. But yes, we are making an extra effort to keep things in check, post the unfortunate Delhi incident."
