A cameraman and reporter from news channel Zee 24 Taas were attacked by a mob in Dighe, Navi Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon while covering the Bombay High Court-directed demolitions being carried out by Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in the Ishwar Nagar area Tuesday afternoon.

The reporter Swati Naik and cameraman Sandeep Bharti were covering the demolitions, when an angry crowd of local residents vented their ire on the media and cornered the media persons present at the spot.

“While covering the story on the demolition, which was going live on television, the angry crowd charged and assaulted us. We tried to save ourselves by hiding in a flat in a nearby building,” Naik said. “The mob broke the door of the flat, entered the residence and continued the assault. The cameraman had to be admitted to hospital”, said Naik.

Chandrakant Katkar, Senior Inspector, Rabale MIDC police station said,”We have taken the statements of the cameraman and the reporter and an offence has been registered for rioting and assault under the Indian Penal Code.”

“We will soon make the arrests in the case, and our investigations are on”, said Katkar.

The Mumbai Press Club condemned the assault on the media persons and issued a statement demanding strict action against the persons involved in the assault.
