Zaveri Bazaar slab collapse: supervisor, office-bearers booked

Almost a week after four persons died in a slab collapse incident in Zaveri Bazaar, the LT Marg Police have registered a case against the supervisor and office-bearers of the building owner, Chauvan corporation.

The incident took place during morning time when labourers were carrying out repair work on the fourth floor of ground-plus-five-story cess structure of Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).

A part of the Dhanji Mulji building in Chhipi Galli structure, which was declared dangerous last year, had collapsed when around nine labourers were carrying out repair works on the fourth floor. The building number 50-52 is located on Shamseth Street in Zaveri Bazaar area in South Mumbai which had a total of 41 tenants — 37 commercial and 4 residential.

According to police, the building had been granted only repairing work. However, the accused demolished major part of the building causing the slab to collapse. The police said, the accused also did not take proper precautions for laborers due to which they died.

"We have registered a case under section 304 (2) (culpable homicide does not amount to murder) and 34 of Indian Penal Code. however the accused have not been arrested yet," said a police officer from LT Marg police station.
