Though the demolition and reconstruction of the British-era Carnac Bunder Bridge at Masjid Bunder in South Mumbai is likely to start after monsoon, the civic body has begun preparing in advance.

After demolishing the Carnac Bunder Bridge, which was declared unsafe, traffic will be diverted to Yusuf Mehrauli Road. Taking a step in that direction, the B ward of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cleared around 90 hutments along Yusuf Mehrauli Road on Friday.

"The Carnac Bunder Bridge is located on Lokmanya Tilak Road, which will be closed once it is demolished. This will require traffic diversion," said Udaykumar Shiroorkar, Assistant Commissioner of B ward. He added that after carrying out a survey of the hutments along Yusuf Mehrauli Road, it was found that the residents were already rehabilitated to Mahul about a year ago, but they did not move.

According to civic officials, lakhs of vehicles use Lokmaya Tilak Road, and after the bridge will be pulled down, the entire traffic will be diverted to other roads, including Yusuf Mehrauli Road.

Shiroorkar said that around 90 hutments were razed and the remaining 40 will be razed after verifying their documents.

An estimated 400-metre stretch along the road was encroached, and their removal will likely make the traffic flow smoother. "This road is important as it connects to P De' Mello Road and Masjid station," said Shiroorkar.

Last month, the BMC got a go ahead from the court to demolish the Carnace Bbridge and build a new one. The bridge passes over a railway line and has been declared unsafe. While the Railways will demolish the bridge, the BMC will carry out its reconstruction.

A senior official from the BMC's Bridge department said that the contractor for reconstructing the new bridge has been selected. "Work can only begin after monsoons," added the official.

Shiroorkar said that they have already written to the Road Department to construct a footpath after the demolition to widen the road.
