YouTube FanFest drew in thousands to celebrate internet content

The second edition of YouTube FanFest which took place in Mumbai on Friday gave over 6,000 fans the opportunity to meet and interact with their internet icons. YouTubers are the new form of internet celebrity that generate a following in the form of subscribers who regularly watch videos uploaded by them on a specific topic.

The second edition of YouTube FanFest which took place in Mumbai on Friday gave over 6,000 fans the opportunity to meet and interact with their internet icons. YouTubers are the new form of internet celebrity that generate a following in the form of subscribers who regularly watch videos uploaded by them on a specific topic.

The line-up for the FanFest featured 24 popular YouTubers, including iiSuperwomanii, Bethany Mota, Jus Reign, Sonal Sagaraya, Scherezade Shroff, Kanan Gill & Biswa Kalyan Rath and East India Comedy.

Vipul Prakash, vice president, marketing, PepsiCo India, one of the sponsors, said that the youth today are creatively inspired, not scared of new experiences and eager to live life in the now. He added: “Consumers and brands across the world are stepping it up to make great things happen through collaborative innovation and a sense of disruption that’s soon becoming the norm. For us, the FanFest exemplifies all of this and stands for original creativity and the young consumer taking control.”

Kanan Gill, YouTuber and the event's co-host, said: “Biswa and I were delighted to host the second-ever FanFest, to see fans who like our work, and to meet other creators from around the world who we are fans of.”

Gautam Anand, director of content and operations, YouTube Asia-Pacific, said: “We brought the FanFest back to Mumbai for a second showing to celebrate the new generation of YouTube stars with some of YouTube’s most passionate fans in Asia.”

Sonal Sagaraya, one of the featured entertainers, gushed: “It was great to have a platform where you can communicate with your audience for real and not just through YouTube comments.”

The event had many musical and comic performances, coupled with a makeover given to one of the fans by three of the top fashion YouTubers. The panel comprised Sonal Sagaraya, Scherezade Shroff and Elton J Fernandez.
Scherezade said: “It was an amazing experience meeting my subscribers and collaborating with other creators. This year, I collaborated on and off stage, so it was awesome.”

Sonal added: “It was challenging to give the fan (Rhea) a complete makeover in just under an hour. But we managed to pull it off and she ended up looking fabulous.”

Manna Kanuga, a fan, said that the overall experience was uniquely unforgettable, adding: “Events like the FanFest are important in a city like Mumbai because it gives amateurs a chance to explore their minds and bodies beyond what Indian society has them think or do. I saw a lot of young people at the event, which means that it can be a true platform for some real change in this world.”
