While Ramzan, for the Muslim community is also known as the month of giving, as many as 30 young Rotaracters have decided to take up a noble cause. After the iftar (The meal eaten after sunset during Ramzan) is over, a lot of food is left over. Hence, the Rotaract Club of Churchgate have initiated a concept of 'Meals on Wheels' – Rehmat-E-Ramadan – in which they would be distributing food packages to the poor and needy people.

The 30 Rotaractors regardless of Bohra, Shia or Sunni sects of the community have collected food packets from four Bohra Masjids in South Mumbai and assembled them at Burani Khokha Bazar Masjid. These food packets included rice, curry and bread which they later distribute among the homeless of Craford Market, Mumbai Central, Mazgaon, Dockyard, Rey Road, Sandhurst Road etc.

“The idea of 'Meals on Wheels' came to us during last Ramzan as we thought that we can distribute the food left in the mosques to the poor people instead of getting it wasted. Hence, the Rotaractors came forward with this concept and we hope to achieve success in it,” said Aliasgar Hussain, community service director, RC Churchgate.

Mustafa Mala, secretary of Burani Masjid, said, “During Ramzan, we make food for over 800 people, however, sometimes the food gets wasted and it is difficult for us to distribute it. With this initiative, these kids have made sure that the food reach the needy.”

Deepa Bai, one of the women who got the food packets at Colaba, said, “I was hungry when these children came and distributed food to us, it quenched my hunger.”

While Vimal Pawar said, “The food packets given to us were from the Masjid. It was like a blessing from the gods for me and my family.”

The month-long initiative saw a good response on the first day where these enterprising Rotaracters collected 250 packets from one Masjid while on day two they collected 500 food packets. “We are increasing the collection day by day. We are expanding our network with other Masjids too and hoping to get sponsored with a truck in which we can take the vessels itself.”
